PESHAWAR:
Nearly 200 junior cadre employees at the Municipal Corporation Peshawar (MCP) are not coming to work because of non-payment of salaries.

Salaries had not been paid to the cleaning staff and watchmen among others for the month of January and February. The representative union of the employees, United Municipal Workers (UMW), said the delay in payment was because of surplus appointments.

The UMW now fears that their financial and administrative crises could worsen as hundreds of surplus employees were inducted into the civic body. “More than 4,800 employees are currently working at the MCP. Paying salaries is a difficult task for the administration which is facing a monthly deficit of Rs90 million,” said Muhammad Fazil, general secretary of UMW. The corporation generates Rs100 million each month while its expenses are Rs190 million, he said.

Fazil added there are administrative loopholes in the revived MCP which causes delay in issuing salaries.

However, MCP Zone-1 Administrator Javed Amjad said they have solved the problem and issued a cheque to release the money. “After receiving directives from the local government secretary, the issue of non-payment of salaries has been resolved.”

Amjad added the inconvenience they were facing was temporary as the administration of MCP was divided into two zones: Zone I includes urban localities of Peshawar and Zone II comprises rural Peshawar. He said the administrative problems would soon be resolved and the surplus staff will be adjusted at the district council.
