PESHAWAR:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has allocated Rs20 million for the establishment of a mini zoo in Hayatabad.

Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) Director Ikram Khan said the zoo will be established over 200 kanals of land in Shalman Park. A jogging track will also be constructed in the park, he added.

Khan said the government of Punjab will initially provide birds and animals for the zoo, including a pair of black deer, zebras, monkeys, partridges and other rare species of deer and sheep. The construction of cages and special boxes to keep the animals has already begun.

The PDA director said a formal event will be organised in Rawalpindi next week in which Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif will officially hand over the animals to the K-P government as a gift from the people of Punjab.

“Till the construction of the cages is complete, the animals will be kept in Bagh-e-Naran, Peshawar,” said Khan, adding that they would be shifted to the zoo in Shalman Park within two months.
