LAHORE:

Police arrested Deputy Managing Director Nadir Feroze and Plant General Manager Shakeel Nagra of Efroze Chemical Industry on Monday after District and Session Judge Nazir Ahmed Ganjana dismissed their pre-arrest bail pleas in the Punjab Institute of Cardiology deaths case.

Three other men whose bail pleas were also dismissed – distributers Tariq Rehman and Musharraf Rehman and storekeeper Muhammad Zulfiqar Ali – escaped. The judge accepted the bail pleas of three doctors and a pharmacist.

The accused are alleged to have shown criminal negligence in the manufacture and distribution of a contaminated batch of the drug Isotab, which resulted in the deaths of 213 heart patients between December 2011 and February 2012.

Feroze was arrested as he left the courtroom of the district and sessions judge, despite attempts by a group of lawyers to shield him from policemen. Nagra was arrested 20 minutes later, after policemen conducted a search of the court complex.
