KARACHI:
Hamdard Foundation has prepared a proposal for the drug regulatory authority to include traditional medicines in Pakistan’s regulatory framework, said experts on Monday.

Researchers from across the world, including Japan, Germany and India, were speaking at the inauguration of a three-day conference on ‘Unani Medicine: Education and Research-Issues and Challenges’, organised by Hamdard Foundation and International Association of Unani Medicine at Hamdard University, on Monday.

The president of Pakistan Association of Eastern Medicine (PAEM), Dr Hakim Abdul Hannan, who is also the secretary general of International Association of Unani Medicine, stressed that the Eastern system of medicine needs to be developed on scientific lines for it to be accepted globally. “PAEM is open to healthcare professionals from all over the world,” he added. “It aims to bring health professionals together to exchange their knowledge of medicine.”

“Pakistan can develop its traditional medicine by collaborating with other countries and developing prevalent research according to scientific methods,” said Mumtazuddin Ahmed, a professor of Anatomy at Masha Collage, Malaysia, at the conference. “There has been a lot of research which shows that traditional medicines cure diseases faster and with fewer side-effects.”

German scholar Dr Geshe Johannknecht pointed out that traditional medicine provides greater understanding of the heart and the mind than biomedical medicine. “Traditional medication used in Europe, Arab countries, Asia and other regions, relates heart diseases to mental illness,” she explained. “The biomedical system of medication does not make this connection.”

Another German scholar, Prof. Dr Stefan Rechmuth, commended the Hamdard Foundation for organising the conference. “The conference serves as a platform for the exchange of diverse perspectives on medicine held by medical schools in Asia and Europe,” he added.
