After devolution: Bill to establish Sindh HEC adopted

The objective of the legislation is to formulate policies for socio-economic development of the province.

KARACHI:
The assembly also unanimously passed a bill on Thursday to establish the Sindh Higher Education Commission. Explaining the objectives of the legislation, law minister Ayaz Soomro said that higher education has been devolved to the provinces after the 18th Amendment to formulate policies for socio-economic development of the province.

The provincial higher education will remain under the sole domain of the chief minister, who will appoint a chairperson giving him the status of a provincial minister. The secretaries of education, information, planning and development, and finance departments will be members of the commission.


The Sindh Assembly also adopted a resolution asking the government approach the federal government to declare the all four regional languages — Sindhi, Balochi, Pashtu and Punjabi — as national languages.

The house also passed a bill into law to establish Hyderabad Institute of Arts, Science and Technology. The session was adjourned till Monday.
