Enforced disappearance: Court seeks reply for illegal detention
A PHC division bench issued the notice while hearing a writ petition filed by Sher Zamin.
PESHAWAR:
Peshawar High Court (PHC) has served the Federal Ministry of Defence a notice seeking reply for allegedly keeping a person in illegal custody at tribal areas. A PHC division bench comprising Chief Justice (CJ) Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmed issued the notice while hearing a writ petition filed by Sher Zamin. Zamin’s counsel Ghulam Nabi informed the bench that the brother of his client, a rickshaw driver, was picked up by personnel of the 19 Sindh Regiment on July 27, 2009. He added Zamin met the officials who assured him of his brother’s release after interrogation. However, he said that despite four years of illegal detention, his Zamin’s brother was yet to reach home upon which bench issued notice to the ministry, seeking a reply as to why detention centres were still being maintained despite the defence secretary’s statement that they will not be allowed to operate.
