Energy sector: PM extends existing tariff regime

Regulators should facilitate the investors so that they are encouraged to invest, says PM.

ISLAMABAD:
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf extended the existing upfront tariff for the wind power projects in Sindh, which expired on December 31, 2012, by another year. The premier was presiding over a high-level meeting of the Sindh Board of Investment at the PM’s Secretariat on Tuesday. The meeting discussed in detail the progress made so far in setting up thermal power plants with Thar coal’s specification and utilisation of the wind corridor in the province for production of electricity. Ashraf said that the energy policy of the government aimed at attracting potential investors to the sector to produce power so that the gap between the supply and demand can be reduced. Regulators should facilitate the investors so that they are encouraged to invest. Investors, he said were being offered attractive incentives by various countries and Pakistan had to compete with them to convince the investors to invest in the country, he added. Ashraf said that the government will have to adjust its policies to keep pace with the dynamic changes to attract foreign investment.
