225 suicides committed last month: Report

Experts blame the rampant non-tolerance in society as the main reason for the hike in suicidal incidents.

At least 225 people including 73 women committed suicide during the one month, according to report by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

According to the report, most of these people ended their lives due to poverty and hostile circumstances.


The report said at least 351 incidents of suicides and suicide attempts were reported during the last one month. However, only 39 First Investigation Reports (FIR) were registered against these incidents.

The report also mentioned that at least 18 people were killed in the name of honour in Sindh, which include Ghtoki's eight-year-old Dadan, while at least 27 people including 21 women were sexually maltreated across the country, which include a four-year-old in Matli and a five-year-old girl in Tando Muhammed Khan.

Experts said the hike in suicidal incidents in the country is an alarming phenomenon and blamed the rampant non-tolerance in the society as the main reason.
