SRINAGAR: Security forces imposed a curfew Saturday in parts of Indian-administered Kashmir while the centre of the main city Srinagar was sealed off by police after the execution of a separatist.
Residents in rural areas said police used loud hailers to order them to stay indoors from daybreak as it emerged that Mohammed Afzal Guru, a member of an I group fighting Indian rule in the divided region, was to be hanged.
Although there was no formal curfew order in Srinagar, police hastily erected barricades across main entry roads and in the city centre in a bid to prevent any possible demonstrations against the execution.
Three police helicopters could also be seen hovering overhead in Srinagar, the main city in what is India's only Muslim majority state.
Authorities at the University of Kashmir in Srinagar meanwhile issued a statement announcing that examinations due to take place on Saturday had been cancelled.
Guru was executed at a jail near Delhi after being found guilty of conspiring with and sheltering militants who attacked the Indian parliament in December 2001, an incident that brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war.
India alleged the militants behind the parliament attack were supported by Pakistani intelligence, leading the nuclear-armed rivals to deploy an estimated one million troops to their borders for eight months.
A former chief minister of Kashmir once warned that executing him would lead the country to "go up in flames" because of a backlash from rebels in Indian Kashmir.

@JSM: Yes i didn't say any thing to kashmiris to do wrong with Pandits in fact Kashmir is under the Government of India Ask Question to your Own Government perhaps they have a answer for you. My Suggestions are if the people of Kashmir's are Mostly Muslims then you should apply Muslim Government there and Pakistan is ready to take a part in this matter Or Give this County to any other Muslim Country But for God sake don't be savage on Kashmiris...

Balochistan voted to be part of Pakistan, so there is no comparison there, in fact the government of Pakistan using the country's own money bought parts of foreign territory and integrated it into Balochistan.

How can India be foreign to Kashmir? If Karachi is not foreign to Peshawar, then Delhi is not foreign to Srinagar. When we called the imperial British a 'foreign power', it was because they came from a little island far away across the ocean; they dressed, talked and behaved in ways alien to subcontinent people. On January 5, 2004 I wrote about Indians "It is a thankless task to try to break their chains but I feel I should try". The main task is the coast-to-coast destruction of the United States. Kashmiris are as human as other people living in our country. Kashmir is their province but they should not support people like Afzal Guru who attack innocent Indians and target the parliament. FYI a poor gardener and journalist died in the Parliament attack.
We are only defending our country -- a union of many provinces -- from becoming full of pieces. We have to find a peaceful solution to all problems but Kashmiris also need to show restraint.
