Demands of Karachi delimitation justified: Nawaz Sharif

PML-N chief says some forces are working to hold back elections and that the party will not let them do so.

KARACHI: Demands for the redrawing of Karachi’s constituencies boundaries are sound, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Friday, Express News reported.

While speaking to media, the PML-N chief said that some forces were working to hold back elections and that his party will not let them do so.

Nawaz's statements follow the Supreme Court observation that the absence of a fresh census may not hinder the Election Commission of Pakistan from performing its constitutional duty of delimitation of Karachi.

On November 26, 2012, a five-member bench of the apex court had observed that constituencies in Karachi should be delimited in a manner that they comprise “mixed population” to avoid political polarisation.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) opposed delimitation, saying that a census is needed first.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim had also said that there will be no delimitation of constituencies in Karachi and that the process is not only difficult but an impossible task.
