RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) authorities have approached the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to get permission to dump its solid waste near IJP Road- a site used by the civic agency of Islamabad to dump its waste.

After stopping dumping of waste near Dhoke Gujran, the cantonment boards of Rawalpindi and Chaklala, as an interim arrangement, are currently disposing of their 400-ton daily waste at Losar after getting permission from the city district government Rawalpindi.

In a letter addressed to the chairman CDA sent on Thursday, the RCB administration has requested the civic body to allow dumping its waste there for time being untill the RCB finds a landfill site, said a senior official of the RCB. The site near Rawat is 36 kilometers away from cantonment areas while the CDA site on IJP Road is only at a distance of 15 kilometers, the official said. He said that if the CDA allowed the RCB to dump its waste near the IJP Road, it would cost the RCB much less as compared to dumping at Losar.

In the meantime, the official said that a site on Adiala Road at some 20 kilometers from the cantonment areas had been singled out for dumping the waste and the process of getting permission from the Ministry of Defence was under way.

The official hoped that the RCB would get a clean chit for the proposed site from all quarters including the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the administration of Dhamial Aviation Base of Pakistan Army. According to him, the proposed site was far off and would not create flight hazards.

When contacted, the RCB Executive Officer, Rana Manzoor Ahmed, confirmed the development and said that a written request had been made to the CDA authorities to get permission to dispose of their waste at the proposed site.
