ISLAMABAD:
Forty passengers including eight women and four children were rescued after remaining stranded in the middle of the frozen Attabad lake for three hours on Monday, locals said. All of them belonged to the same family from Passu village in Gojal Tehsil of Hunza-Nagar District, and were returning from Gilgit after attending the funeral of Nadir Aman, a noted painter, who died in Gilgit on Sunday. The boat carrying the grieved people stuck in ice in the middle of the lake. They were rescued by the residents of a nearby village Shishkat by breaking the ice, Ali Ahmed, a local journalist said. A raft was sent to rescue the stranded passengers but it could not reach them due to massive frozen ice on the lake, Ahmed said quoting Hussain Jami, acting in-charge of the Gulmit police station. The people of Gojal are facing hardships as the helicopter service to the valley is suspended for the last five days.
