HYDERABAD: The Sindh University administration on Monday rejected outright the principle demand of protesting staff members - the removal of registrar Mohammad Nawaz Narejo.

During a SU syndicate meeting presided over by vice chancellor Dr Nazir A Mughal, the administration decided that other demands of the members of the Sindh University Employees Workers Association (SUEWA) would be met, but that “the university would not allow any staff member to blackmail it”. The meeting also decided to form a five-member committee comprising Prof. Anwer Ali Shah, Dr Sarfraz Solangi, Dr Ghulam Murtaza Mastoi, Prof. Imran Halepoto and Dr Imdad Ismaili, to negotiate with SUEWA leaders.

Classes resume

Meanwhile, the SU administration claimed in a statement that all classes at the varsity had resumed on Monday, and that a “majority of students” were also present. The registrar, Mohammad Nawaz Narejo, claimed that faculty members were cooperating with the administration.

The teaching staff of SU, as well as, the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology and Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences had gone on strike on January 30, a day after police had used batons and tear gas shelling to disperse SUEWA members, who had been staging a sit-in to protest against Narejo.
