KARACHI:
Five policemen were arrested and an SHO of the Sohrab Goth police station was suspended on charges of negligence on Saturday.
ASI Rana Shabbir and Constable Afzal were suspended from their posts and arrested after the constable shot dead a mental patient, 25-year-old Babar Khan, on Saturday. The incident occurred when committee members of a mosque in Zia Colony, Korangi, called the police late Friday night to get Khan out of the mosque. The police alleged that Khan had been sitting idle in the mosque since morning. They claimed that the constable shot him accidentally while trying to get him out of the mosque. The victim’s family held a protest to condemn the killing.
Senior police officials said that Khan’s life could have been saved if the constable had been careful and if the police officials had brought him to hospital on time.
Separately, two police constables of Sharafi Goth police station, Faraz and Anwar, were suspended and then arrested after two suspects, Nawaz and Saqib, escaped from their custody. Police officials said that the suspects were caught when they tried to kill the former president of Malir Bar Association, Amanullah Yousufzai, on Friday. SHO Aziz Sheikh from the Sohrab Goth police station was also suspended on the charge of negligence. He was found guilty during an inquiry constituted to probe the delay in registering the FIR for the murder of a young truck driver.
Another police constable from New Karachi police station, Farooq, was arrested for allegedly murdering a 50-year-old man, Farooq, and injuring another, Malik Saeed in Shahnawaz Bhutto Colony. DSP Muhammad Akhtar said the case is being investigated.
