Civil servants: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly passes bill for pension benefits
Parliamentary leader Abdul Akbar Khan says 94,000 employees will be beneficiaries.
PESHAWAR:
The provincial assembly of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday passed the K-P Civil Servants Amendment bill, 2013, which will entitle 94,000 employees of the provincial government to pension and gratuity benefits.
The private member bill introduced by Abdul Akbar Khan and Israrullah Khan Gandapur, and previously referred to the Standing Committee on Law Reforms, was presented by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) parliamentary leader Abdul Akbar Khan.
The pension benefits were earlier discontinued for employees inducted in the provincial civil service after June 30, 2001. These civil servants were offered the contributory provident (CP) fund scheme instead of the general provident (GP) fund through amendments in Section 19 of the Civil Service Act, 1973.
The report submitted by the standing committee termed this amendment discriminatory and criticised the finance department for failing to devise a mechanism to streamline the CP fund even after a lapse of 11 years.
The report added that the law was only applicable in this province and did not apply to the police department.
Abdul Akbar Khan said government employees inducted following the enactment of the amended law will also enjoy the benefits. He maintained the total number of beneficiaries to be 94,000.
The session has been adjourned till Friday.
