A private security guard was killed and a policeman was wounded as bandits broke into a private bank branch in Orangi Town and fled with approximately Rs1.8 million on Tuesday.
Witnesses said that at least five men clad in shalwar kameez arrived at the the United Bank Limited branch in Orangi Town on motorcycles and a Toyotta Corolla around noon. They opened fire on the private security guard, Shumal Khan, and the police constable, Asif Jamil, who was deployed at the bank. Four bandits then entered the bank, while their companion stood outside.
Orangi division SSP Nasir Aftab told The Express Tribune that the culprits stole cash from the counters, and did not break into the bank’s vault room.
They also did not bother to take away the CCTV cameras installed inside the branch, but broke the bank’s DVR system. SSP Aftab said that footages recorded in the DVR system were safe, and that officials were repairing it so that the culprits could be identified. SSP Aftab suggested that the criminals might have been affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
Police officials believed that the robbers completed their operation within three minutes. No case was registered till the filing of this report.
