The bomb was placed inside a pressure cooker and was found by a labourer working in the area.
The police said that it took a long time for the Bomb Disposal Squad to defuse the bomb and the bomb would have caused major damage.
The bomb also had two detonators and was expertly made, the police added.
According to SP Salman Syed, the bomb could have been a reaction to the arrest of sons of a key Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader.
While there have been several bomb blasts in Karachi in the past few months, the police and the Bomb Disposal Squad has also successfully managed to defuse many bombs. Two remote-controlled bombs in Orangi Town and Steel Town were defused on the first day of 2013.
Police had blamed the TTP for planting the first bomb outside the house of a political party activist in Orangi.
