QUETTA:

Four policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), were killed on Saturday when their vehicle came under attack.

According to police officials, the police van was on a routine patrol in the Ghousabad area of the provincial capital, within Satellite Town police station’s jurisdiction, when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on it.

Three policemen, identified as ASI Ajab Khan and constables Abdul Jabbar and Abdur Rehman, were killed on the spot, while the van’s driver was critically injured. The latter, however, succumbed to his injuries after reaching the Civil Hospital.

Meanwhile, the assailants managed to escape from the crime scene.

“Initial investigations suggest the attack was a case of targeted killing,” a police official told The Express Tribune. He added that investigations to uncover the actual motive behind the attack were under way.

No group claimed responsibility till the filing of this report.

Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani condemned the incident and directed the inspector general and capital city police officer to arrest the culprits immediately. He also announced Rs2 million for each of the deceased’s families and jobs for their heirs in the police department.

Attacks on police personnel have been on the rise in the province. Earlier in the week, two policemen were killed and another one was injured in an attack on a police checkpoint.

Unfortunately Police has yet to make its presence felt as a force. IG Police should stand by his men and give a befitting reply like FC, which has broken their back in Mashkey.
