ASWJ strike: Karachi in partial shutdown

Violent mobs in parts of city burn tyres, block roads.

KARACHI: The metropolis experienced partial shutdown on Wednesday as Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat (ASWJ), formerly the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP), observed a day of mourning following a targeted attack on its leader Aurangzeb Farooqi.

ASWJ Karachi chief Farooqi narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday when motorcycle-riding attackers ambushed his convoy in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

Violent mobs in Lasbela, Patel Para and Sher Shah burnt tyres and blocked roads today, disrupting the flow of traffic.

Unidentified armed men in Korangi pelted stones at cars in the area.

Incidents of firing were also reported in different areas of the city.

Public transport remained off the roads while petrol pumps and CNG stations were shut down.
