I'm more than just a flag: McIlroy

The 23-year-old could have to choose between representing Ireland or Britain at the Games in Rio.

World number one Rory McIlroy has revealed that he does not want to be tied to one flag if he manages to qualify for Rio Olympics 2016, according to The Belfast Telegraph.

The 23-year-old could have to choose between representing Ireland or Britain at the Games in Rio when golf becomes an Olympic sport for the first time. "It's a tough one,” said McIlroy.

“Being from Northern Ireland brings its own difficulties whenever you have to choose who to play for or an allegiance. It's just a difficult position to be in because you don't want to let anyone down and you don't want to upset anyone. I feel I'm more than just a flag. I play golf and I'm an international sports person and it doesn't tie me to one flag or one allegiance."
