Pit latrines set up at relief camps
A chain of pit toilets will be developed at the relief camps established for flood victims to contribute towards improved health and sanitary conditions, announced Mehnaz Rehman, Aurat Foundation Sindh Chapter resident director on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, Health and Nutrition Development Society, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, National Commission on Status of Women, Sohana Foundation, Women’s Action Forum, Inner Wheel and others.
The participants decided to coordinate their work to avoid repetition. NGOs having expertise in health and hygiene will be approached before the latrines are built.
Initial assessment done by the Aurat Foundation showed that people need food, water coolers, glasses, spreads, sandals, dried milk, biscuit and dry food for kids. Now they need medicines and interventions to prevent the outbreak of deadly diseases.
