The University of Manitoba (UM) in Canada agreed on Tuesday to establish a Technical Support Unit (TSU) in collaboration with Punjab AIDS Control Programme.


The decision was taken in a meeting between Health Secretary Arif Nadeem and UM Centre for Global Public Health Director Dr James Blanchard.

Dr Blanchard gave a presentation on establishing the unit. The initiative will identify key questions, build knowledge regarding them and translate the knowledge into policies and programme designs.


Dr Blanchard said the UM had provided technical assistance for such programmes in India and several other countries in Asia and Africa.

Health Secretary Nadeem agreed there was a need to introduce scientific research in designing preventive programmes.

He said collaboratioen public health institutions on preventive programmes would be useful.

A concrete proposal with a working plan shall be provided to the health department. The initiative will start with the HIV/AIDS Control Programme and later be expanded to other programmes such as the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Programme.

The health special secretary, additional secretaries, Punjab AIDS Control Programme managers, Institute of Public Health dean, Action Aid and Punjab AIDS Consortium representatives attended the meeting.
