LAHORE:

Dog owners showed off their German Shepherds at a specialty dog show here on Saturday. Some 150 dogs took part in the event, which gave the owners a chance to show off their pets and increase their market value.

The dog show, organised by the German Shepherd Dog Club of Pakistan, was meant to be held at Bagh-i-Jinnah but had to be shifted to a ground at H Block in Defence. The event attracted a decent crowd, said organiser Shehzada Imran.

The dogs were taken round the track by their owners for the judges. For some dogs, two or three helpers ran on the outside calling out and whistling to keep them focussed.

Imran said that the dogs were judged on a number of qualities such as walking and trotting style. He said the next dog show would be held on December 23 at the American School Harbanspura.

A good display on the course is often much about team work rather than a single dog runner, said Muhammad Rizwan, who ran his nine-month-old bitch in the competition.

Rizwan, a banker who lives in Model Town, said though there was no prize money, these competitions have monetary incentives. The winning dog increases its resale value, while the kennel club the dog represents gets free marketing. “But I ran alone with my dog. It was great fun,” he said.

Mujahid from the Royal Safari Kennel said that he ran two dogs in two categories, one of which won first in the junior puppy competition. He said that German Shepherds cost around Rs50,000 for a puppy, to around Rs700,000 for an adult dog. He said that wining a dog show could double the dog’s value or even more.
