Civil society members in Chitral have threatened to observe a shutter-down strike if the government fails to reopen the Lowari Tunnel by December 18.
Addressing a news conference in Chitral Press Club on Thursday, former district nazim Maghfirat Shah said that the incumbent government is not sincere in resolving the problems faced by the people of the district. The press conference was also attended by members of the Chital Development Network .
Shah said they had asked the government multiple times to open the tunnel for traffic, however, they were let down by the authorities each time with the excuse that construction work on the tunnel was still underway. “Construction of the tunnel is now complete. Why don’t the authorities open it then?” a speaker said, adding that due to accidents on alternative routes, four people had died and several had been injured in the last month alone.
