Mazhar Abbas asked whether the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had the capability and will to “reunite the old party, revisit the old party programme, eradicate corruption within the party and face the people with courage”.
There has been a concerted effort in the past year by the people of a constituency to create a negative image of the PPP chairman before he takes the national stage in an elected capacity. For those who argue that Mr Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari is already in the thick of Pakistani politics as chairman of the largest political party in Pakistan, I would agree.
However, only members of our party with whom he has interacted daily for the past five years know the extent of his involvement in the day-to-day affairs of the party — which are extensive.
Senator Jahangir Badar, secretary general of the PPP, and others of his seniority and stature can testify that Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto included her son at numerous political meetings from a very young age. And, in many ways, his instruction and education was based on the model that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto created for his daughter and Bilawal’s mother, Benazir.
South Asian politics is often bloody and tragic. And, as a young, valiant and bright Benazir stepped up to the challenge after her father’s judicial murder by the military-judicial complex, so, too, has the current chairman. And, as Begum Nusrat Bhutto guided her daughter after Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s murder, so, too, has PPP Co-Chairman, President Asif Ali Zardari, continued the political education given to Bilawal for the most challenging times Pakistan has ever faced after Partition. Ideally, a democracy should be able to find new leaders with different family backgrounds every decade. But, Pakistan’s democracy is still young. Like many countries, our culture values family legacy.
Unlike the spoilt, undereducated offspring of some powerful families and political leaders, who have joined politics upon completing other careers, Bilawal is a mature, thoughtful and well-read man. He has learned practical politics through inclusion by his mother and during her years in exile, where she single-handedly ran the PPP: in meetings, some private, some party-oriented and some of a very high level and private nature.
Perhaps, if one was to take the blinkers off and examine the public stands that Bilawal has taken in his political career, one may see a different politician. But, the concerted campaign to malign him must be ignored first.
Though no voice was willing to speak out strongly and fearlessly after the murder of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Bilawal did. And, his political beliefs were made clear to all. His words on that day resonate specially in today’s Pakistan. When Malala Yousufzai was targeted by the Taliban in Swat, only two party leaders spoke out and named the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan — Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Muttahida Quami Movement chief Altaf Hussain.
In fact, the politician in Pakistan who best espouses the social democratic politics of the PPP as envisioned and practised by Benazir Bhutto is Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
Those of us in the PPP know and understand the politics of vilification and demonisation well: starting from Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, to his daughter and now, his grandson. And, many of us have also paid the price for remaining loyal to the party.
But, we also know our leadership far better than our detractors. There is far more discourse and debate within the PPP than people realise. The politics of principle is still alive and I believe that the PPP chairman is delivering and will continue to deliver into the future. Give him a chance.

@Lahori: oh, please understand her husband wants foreign minister job under His Royal Highness Bilawal Zardari ...
Just one word to descibe Bilawal - LOL!
What a wonderful piece of apple polishing job. Shame on the scribe. There should some semblance of balance and even handedness. It such are the so called thinkers only Allah save our Muslim world. Do what you may your hubby will not get the job back. But this is the finest piece of fiction I have read for a long time.
The writer was a member of the National Assembly from 2008-2012. She was recently named in Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers for 2012
The footnote under the author's photo reproduced in bold above should be modified to read as follows:
The writer was a member of the National Assembly from 2008-2012. She was disqaulified and kicked out of the honourable institution for brazenly lying about her dual nationality. She is a serf of PPP waderas and resides in the US from where she contributes inane, undemocratic, medievel piffle in support of her feudal lords
Shame on you Farahnaz...Shame on you
PPP always worked for the betterment of the people and country. I could yet remember that when there was shortage of power, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed signed several agreements with foreign countries to cater the soaring demands of electricity. Several projects were launched during the regime of Mohtarma Shaheed, how unfortunately the succeeding governments of PML-N and then Musharraf did nothing for the energy deficit, even no single power plant was installed during Musharraf government. The same is the case with gas shortage. Pakistan is suffering from worst even energy crisis. The onslaught of Supreme Court on RPPS has further intensified the power outage problem. Such unrealistic moves make no sense when country is already facing a problem.
No Doubt….PPP is a Largest Political Party of Pakistan, and it will make next government in Pakistan after a Transparent Election, but Anti Bhutto lobby will never be satisfied, because they are always in search of shortcuts. In 1977 they used Islamic issue, Gen.Zia and SC CJ Anwaar ul Haq against Bhutto, even this mindset declares the Bhutto as non Muslim. Now they are again active and using Judiciary, but they will not be successful, as it is not 1977. There is no other party who has had the charisma of ZAB & BB, the bravery of Salman Taseer and Shahbaz bhatti? Tell me a party which can get votes from ALL ethnicities? PML-N may get one or two votes from Sindh but thats about it. MQM is not even a player except in Urdu speaking communities.. PPP has the most potential among all parties just because of their diverse vote bank.
Bilawal, a people’s man, a true Bhutto, who is carrying the vision from his Great mother has grown up watching his mother rendering sacrifices for the Pakistan and for its people. Talking to the Taseer memorial he was outspoken. Bashing the supporters of Mumtaz Qadri, he said: “Because of you, the message of Islam is distorted in the world. Those who attack my religion, especially those who corrupt its peaceful message, you are what I call covert blasphemers and you will be defeated”. Indeed there was determination, pledge, firmness in the stand taken by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Now I am convinced that this young man has the impending, the capability and the courage to lead this country and end extremism in the society.
Is it not that PPP Govt always toppled and leaders of PPP tortured mentally as well as physically? Is it not there image was maligned and fabricated charges leveled against them. Why there is discrimination. Is it not unjust? Or is it so Sindh is not part of Pakistan. Pardon me, if Politicians from Punjab, elite feudal class and media do not change its attitude, there is no guarantee that Pakistan will exist. For It were the Sindhi leaders who rendered their lives to safe Pakistan. Just give me a single example of any other party who lost its leaders for the country and democracy. If same practice goes on history will witness that There will be no other Bhutto to safe Pakistan, There is will be no other Benazir to sacrifice her life in the way of democracy and there will no other Zardari to chant “Pakistan Khappy”. It is time to play role, masses of Pakistan should also realize the critical situation and must raise voice against those anti- Pakistan entities that want to break Pakistan and demolish nascent democracy.
Government is elected by the people of Pakistan they have justification to complete their term if we believe in democracy and rule of law we must honor their mandate One elected Prime Minister Zulifqar Ali Bhutto was killed by Judiciary well known case as judicial murder PPP offered great sacrifices for the democracy and the restoration of present judiciary it is defining moment for the judiciary that they want to go down in the history as hero or Zero. Track record of our Judiciary shows it always served the dictators even they give unconstitutional powers to General Musharraf to amend the constitution whenever he require and in the past and in present Judiciary never called any General to their courts on very big blunders like East Pakistan Tragedy Bhutto’s hanging , Kargil , Siachin and looted wealth by Military Dictators the Question is Why only PPP is accountable in this country the selective justice is no justice PPP lost many precious lives of Bhuttos and their workers this party is symbol of federation please don’t kill the federation. How long we will continue witch hunting of PPP. It is time to stand unite and sacrifice our personal interests for the sake of this country.
How blatantly agencies negating of their involvement and proving politicians liars. All the politicians underscored agencies role in toppling Benazir Bhutto Shaheed. Asghar Khan Case has made Pakistan a laughing stock. It is not only mockery of Pakistan but the people as well. Conspiracies are hatched against PPP since its inception. Younis Habbib very clearly mentioned that he was compelled to level fabricated cased against Asif Ali Zardari. What is the compensation for damage that PPP received from IJI. Nawaz Sharif today is trying to become the champion of democracy was the main culprit. Doesn’t he deserve a capital punishment? Earlier Saif ur Rehman confessed that Zardari was charged on graft cases leveled on the direction of Nawaz Sharif and now Younis Habib repeated the same story. What is the legal position of these cases against Asif Zardari? Would honorable CJP take any sue moto on this issue?
@akhtar khan: Very well said....does she has the courage to mis-declare in any form in America as she did in her nomination form...?
Why is this young lad the future of Pakistan?
How is he equipped to lead when he hasnt done much in/for the country ( including be fluent in its language, or have shared the hardships of practical life in pakistan). . How is he in a postion to comment on international or even national politics based on mummy and daddies positions?
Bilawal lad please burn your boats, live and tough it out in the regular pakistan ( without VVVIP protocol) with your workers. Find a constituency and work tirelessly for its uplift. Only then will you have a leg to stand on when you want to be a leader of a country. There are no shortcuts. If you believe yourself to be the the lord and master of pakistan , please stay far far away. we have too many young priveleged lads who want to joing the family ( mega bucks ) business without a thought for merit.
haha and we should totally believe you since your bread and butter is totally not connected to PPP remaining in power. A 23 year old boy was trained by her mother who died 5 years ago, has spent more of his life abroad than in pakistan, has nothing in common with even upper middle class pakistanis, who cant even speak urdu properly, has no credentials what so ever except being the son of Mr. 10% and a two time prime minister with an abysmal record. yeah NICE TRY BUT NO THANK YOU!!!
Absolutely shocking and appalling stuff. Does the author feel no shame in endorsing dynastic politics by invoking culture? This entire piece is an example of how intellectually bankrupt our rulers and politicians are. It is wilfully dishonest and the arguments made in favour of moving the country's leadership positions like a piece of family furniture appear so awkward and forced that it is not difficult not to see through vested interests. You are not even trying! My sincere plea to you madam is to stop treating us like donkey's and this country as your own personal kitty bag to fund your decadent lifestyles. We have had enough!
Excellent article! One of very few outstanding individuals left of Pakistani origin around the world. Sadly establishment pushed her & her outstanding husband out of the country.
Dear Madam,
Really? Can not get tragic when ambassadors of Pakistan start writing such pieces. And I hold you complicit in crime. I am glad the that all the readers have unanimoulsy rebutted against you. Atleast there are people with a true grit in our nation left!
I am 100% convinced that the people of this country cannot be as stupid as they have been for so long. Anyone supporting this failed excuse of a government has got some vested interest in them. There is no other way a sensible person would want a repeat of the last 5 years....
Having spent most of his life outside Pakistan and being just in his early 20s, why should Bilawal Zardari feel it is his birthright to take on the mantle of the PPP and contest elections? If his mother had wanted him to carry on the family legacy, how is it we never heard of it when Benazir was alive? Why are politics in Pakistan seen as being a birthright or legacy? This is what has blighted Pakistan! If Farahnaz Ipshani has so much faith in Pakistan and the PPP, why is she hiding in the US? All well and good to get accolades in the US (based on what i wonder). Come back and face the music. If you have so much faith in the political system why dont you show it in your actions? Words are cheap!
I find this piece extremely apologetic in its approach, and very superficial in its reasoning. If the fact that we are still a "young" democracy should be sufficient to allow aristocratic politics in Pakistan, then it should be sufficient to justify a great deal more. "Young" democracies didn't have universal franchise, so why not scratch that too? Or "young" democracies often have a military-business junta at the top, so why not encourage that? "Young" democracies will only mature if we let them, and if we step out of this vicious self-fulfilling circle of perpetuating power politics.
I also find the high-flown narrative used to describe Bilawal quite hollow. I would like to see facts and figures, his list of achievements, his hobbies, testimonials from his friends. If my time spent at Oxford allowed me to guage anything, it was that he made limited, next-to-none, appearances at Pakistan Society events, particularly if they were political. If he really is the seasoned politician that he is sketched out here as, why couldn't he appear at Imran Khan's event and propagate a healthy debate? Instead, despite repeated invites, he failed to attend. He also failed to be on the Oxford Speaking Union, the debating society that is held in great prestige at Oxford and of which, Benazir Bhutto had the great privilege of being the first woman president.
I find little to appreciate in Bilawal. What needs to be understood is that there is no maligning campaign against him; unfortunately, he is too easy to ignore as it is. I wish him well, but under no circumstances will I hand him the reins of my country.
Obviously I have no comment about which party should win the next elections in Pakistan - PPP, PML-N or PTI. That is for Pakistanis to decide. However the parallels between Bilawal and Rahul are very strong (Both had a parent and a grand parent who was the Prime Minister of the country and who met violent death and were educated abroad).
Now Rahul has more engagement in Indian politics compared to Bilawal. COnsider - He has been elected to the parliament 2 times and has been an MP (similar to your MNA) for the last 8 years. - HE has led from the front 2 state election campaigns - one in UP and one in BIhar - He has traveled throughout the country including rural areas and also traveled in second class train from Bihar o Mumbai to understand what migrant labourers go through.
Yet many COngres supporters also do not consider him as fit to lead the country and are concerned about the 2014 elections because
In both UP and Bihar state elections Congress fared extremely poorly and thus he has been unable to prove his organizational skills He has never given a single speech on the floor of the house He is unwilling to accept any cabinet position so that his performance can be judged.IF Rahul is considered unprepared to lead his party and government by many COngress supporters, can Bilawal be considered prepared - no matter whose son and grand son he is? Please note : This opinquestion has nothing to do with whether PPP should win or not as I do not have any opinion on that.
The writer of this article is exactly what is wrong with Pakistan. It is disgusting to see such an " intelligent" commentator want to continue on the same path that has damned Pakistan for the last 65 years. Nepotism at its best. Wow! Bilawal has no idea of the plight of Pakistanis. He cant even speak the national language properly and is a total fake.
@Mirza: Indeed true. Victim card is PPP's only hope as performance kitty bag is empty like poor man's coffer.
Earlier I was only skeptical about the credibility of foreign policy's top 100 global thinkers list, now I am sure about it.
And she is one of the greatest thinkers in the world!! Looks like, December 2012 is really bringing the doom!
@ Madam Ispahani
The nation is desperately looking for a political leader who diplays even a semblance
of ability integrity and vision . If such a person emerges on the scene no "villification
and demonisation"' will hamper his way .
But Bilawal has done little so far to figure in people's estimation .Euologies by the blind
devotees of the Bhutto clan will not make much dent . The masses today are far more
critical and awakened to be taken in by traditional gimmicks .
Singing praises of dynastic politics that too in the name of democracy ---what audacity. Ma'm dynastic politics has to go if democracy is ever to prosper in Pakistan.
She was recently named in Foreign Policy’s Top 100 Global Thinkers for 2012 ....After reading her article I doubt the rating authority ... A Global thinker thinks Bilawal should be given chance....?
What a shallow piece of flattering. Writer is just trying to please Zardari without any substance. Bilawal is too young to be on the helm of affairs. He has no credentials to run a country with immense challenges. By all accounts, Pakistan is lagging behind in the whole region. There is no need to repeat all the statistics. Any data from reputed institutions is proving that. Pakistan cannot handle more on-the-job training. Please have mercy on 180 million souls.
Madam...with all due respect..problem is not "bill" but his dad. Anyway...at least you admitted there is corruption within the party.
Well written He has the substance, no doubt
Even his name is a lie. He is bilawal zardari not bilawal Bhutto. You could see confusion and inconsistency in writing. In some places it is with hyphen bilawal Bhutto-zardari. in others it was with space bilawal Bhutto zardari.
Name shows he is more about inheritance than performance.
@Mirza: "Many hate and oppose him being called a Bhutto." With all due respect, what lies in name rose is a rose afterall if any! Anyways Bilawal is an internal matter of ppp:If he can steer a party in better direction well and good. Its the voters of ppp who have to decide whether they want to continue with dynasity politics and remain poor and backward as before or to say good bye to family politics and demand real leaders who can give his/her people dignity, better life and not meethi goli like before.
Wondering on what criteria you are included in Global thinker list????.Its a shame really!!!.The article written applauded nepotism and dynastic politics , shows ILL thinking.
Didn't the American Secret Service agent wrote a book and common opinion among the agents were that he was a "retard"? The writer may belong to the same clan.
PPP needs to realize that lamenting about military-judicial excesses against its leaders can only take them so far, people will not care a hoot about their victimisation if they don't deliver and PPP has given this country the worst 5 years in its history
Excellent Madam Ispahani, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is the will of the people of PPP that is the largest party of Pakistan. Well said that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is brought up in the way by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto that in future not only of PPP while of whole Pakistan responsibility will lay upon the shoulders of this boy. I am sure Bilwal will learn more if he is surrounded by sincere, honest and farsighted people like you not the opportunists and fair weather friends who make harder shells around the leadership that they can keep them away from public. Very well written piece ... Excellence
Shame on u... A well educated women advocating injustice and kinship just to remain visible and earn brownie points from sarkars Of Zardari. He is no Bhutto, he's Zardari from blood... Who are u All trying to fool... Bilawal can become a Bhutto in one case only, only if his father was not a Zardari but a Bhutto... 21 years old being taught by her mother who died 5 years ago. Haha what a joke... And why can't Naheed khan testify it why Jahangir bader?? Stop living in fools paradise and stop appeasing ur masters who are looters of this country... Stop it if u have a bit of morality left.
A very fair and balanced Op Ed by a highly educated leader of PPP. Despite all the murders of his elders his enemies are bent upon taking on Bilawal and malign him even before he comes into public service. Many hate and oppose him being called a Bhutto. Many want to deprive him the right to change his name. Many want to make him responsible for all the baggage of his father even though nothing is proven in any court of law despite wasting millions. It is always the choice of people of Pakistan to choose their leaders and they have always admired the services and sacrifices of Bhutto family and PPP. The more PPP is victimized the more it becomes popular.
Brilliant brilliant brilliant. Isphahani is very reasonable moderate and logical Bilawal is our man. Secular and liberal, who can get us off from the religious bigotry and extremism
A surprisingly balanced and intelligent article, was expecting the usual one sided harangue. The two examples of Bilawal given, one at Salman Taseer's murder and the other at Malala's shooting were accurate and appreciated instances but what one quickly realised was that there was no follow up from the government in both these cases. This reflected poorly on him and these were first impressions and showed where he actually stood. The young man may have good qualities but the' baggage ' he carries will be a burden many feel he will not be able to shed.
But whats your concern with Pakistan and its people ? You and your “wife” hussain haqqani better continue with foot massage of US bosses.
Good news. If President of PPP is delivering, we can go back to sleep. I wish it was true. Nobody can solve all problems of Pakistan. If Bilawal remains secular and increase his democratic credentials, we should look forward for him to enter politics actively. He is young, but youth has also many advantages. Young people have new ideas and look at the problems in a pragmatic way. Recently he praised Nawaz sharif and Imran Khan. That is the way to go. Reconciliation, but remaining true to your own ideals.
