LUMHS students call off hunger strike
University authorities inform MBBS students of 2007-08 that their clinical training is unlikely to begin before 2014.
HYDERABAD:
Final year students of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), who had been protesting against the prospect of losing a year of their medical education, decided to temporarily call off their token hunger strike on Monday.
University authorities informed the 360 MBBS students of the 2007-08 batch that their clinical training was unlikely to begin before 2014.
“We will resume our hunger strike from next month and will also boycott annual examinations [scheduled for this December] if the government doesn’t assure us that our time will not be wasted,” said a student, Malik Musadiq during a press conference.
The delay has been attributed to the health ministry’s reluctance to release funds for stipends to 760 house job students. The government pays a monthly stipend of Rs24,000 to every student.
