Black sheep: Cop arrested for aiding gang of cattle thieves

Thieves rounded up from head constable’s office in Mitroo police station.

MULTAN:

A head constable was arrested in Vehari on Saturday for allegedly heading a gang of cattle thieves.

Muhammad Hussain, a resident of Mitroo village, said some thieves had entered his house last night and tried to make off with one of his three buffaloes.

“Villagers saw them entering the house and surrounded it… Police were also informed,” he said.

He said the men managed to flee and were seen entering the Mitroo police station.

SHO Muhammad Sadiq Baloch ordered police to surround the police station and led a raid into Head Constable Muhammad Sahoo’s room. Two of the suspects, Bashir Ahmed and Ahmed Sher were arrested and some weapons were seized from them.

SHO Baloch told The Express Tribune that Sahoo had told them he was the head of a gang of cattle thieves. Sahoo said the five-member gang would steal a buffalo and load it onto his truck. He said the animals were sold in Vehari and Multan.

Sahoo had been head of the Investigation Cell and chief of the FIR cell at the police station. SHO Baloch said Sahoo had been suspended from service on the DPO’s orders. He said the police were conducting raids to arrest other members of the gang.

He said they appeared to have fled towards Vehari.

Three cases of cattle theft have been registered against the suspects on applications of Tauseef Ahmed, Muhammad Rakh and Mushtaq Ahmed.

Tauseef Ahmed said there had been over 100 cattle thefts in the area over the last two months. “All the people whose cattle were stolen, gathered around the police station and asked the police to register an FIR against the men and recover their cattle.”

He said the people also asked police to hand over the thieves and let panchayat decide their punishment.

He said over 100 cattle had been stolen and 30 applications for registeration of FIRs had been lodged in two months.

SHO Baloch said Tauseef’s stolen cattle had been recovered and the vehicle used to transport them had been seized.
