LAHORE:

The managing director of the Pak Arab Refinery Company (Parco) told the Lahore High Court on Thursday that there was sufficient Euro II-compliant diesel in the country for public transport buses.

The court was hearing a petition against the Punjab government’s plan to import 1,200 buses for the Metro Bus Service in Lahore that run on Euro-II compliant diesel, which is more environmentally-friendly than fuel types commonly used in public transport in the country.

The court adjourned the hearing until December 6 and extended a stay order on the opening of tenders for the purchase of the buses. The court had earlier allowed the government to import only 100 buses for the MBS.

The petitioner, Gujranwala City Tours (private), contended that the government was about to buy the buses when the fuel required to run them was not even available in the province.

He said local oil refineries did not have the capability of producing the fuel. He asked the court to stop the government from buying the buses.
