Japan offers support to link Thar power with national grid

Envoy expresses positive sentiments regarding business climate in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Japan has offered to support Thar coal power projects and construct transmission line to inter-link the project with national grid, said Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Hiroshi Oe. He was speaking to the Federal Minister for Water and Power, Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar in a meeting on Thursday.

The envoy discussed various matters of mutual interest, energy situation and current political situation. He expressed his views on investment opportunities in Pakistan and observed that the investment environment was positive, thus Japanese companies were interested to put their capital in various projects.

He also shared his interest to invest in the Mangla Dam power extension project. He assured that Japan will continue its financial and technical support for social sector development. Oe also appreciated the current recovery drive of the Ministry of Water and Power and said that it will help boost cash flow for power generation.

Mukhtar, while welcoming the envoy, appreciated Japanese efforts and said that the government was taking all possible measures for generating cheap electricity. He said that indigenous resources were being utilised for future projects to generate affordable energy. He said that a wind power project will start generation in the next couple of months, while the other wind projects will be commissioned in the next year.

Mukhtar also asked the Japanese envoy to seek Japanese investment in wind, solar and other hydel power projects.

Pakistan and Japan have similar coal problems -- low quality coal which is hard/expensive to extract and far enough away from population centers to require expensive transmission lines. That's why the vast majority of coal burned in Japan is imported.

Our leaders know it well but its politics - they cannot go back to their people and tell them that had been a fool all these years. And we allot tender to local companies, they will try to make profit as one time measure, use low quality material, pay low to employees and the dam will break down in max 5 years
