
Waseem, who defeated a Romanian pugilist in the semi-final, was in aggressive touch as he claimed the epic battle 11-5.
According to details provided by Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF), Waseem faced resistance in initial stages of the battle but soon adapted attacking strategy to dominate the match and seal the medal. “I have the confidence and now I am targeting medals at the Commonwealth and the Asian Games,” said Waseem.
Five Pakistani boxers took part in the event but except Waseem, none of the rest were able to make it past the opening stages of the competition.
Camp underway despite absence of teams
The joint boxing camp that started on August 25 has yet to see six of the seven foreign teams arrive in Islamabad to join hosts Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Central Africa, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya are yet to join the camp owing to delay in visas and approval process.
“Mauritius would join the camp in a couple of days while the rest of teams are also expected by September 5,” said PBF Secretary Akram Khan.
Akram, however, said that despite the camp not being in full swing, the Pakistani and Sri Lankan boxers were undergoing strenuous training.
“Five boxers from each country would face each other in aspiration fights today which will give them match practice,” said Akram.
Haroon joins camp
Haroon Khan, younger brother of world boxing champion Amir Khan has arrived in Pakistan to join the camp. The UK-based boxer would join the camp in a few of days. Haroon, who was named in Pakistan squad after being snubbed by England, would make his debut in the Commonwealth Games.
