Court summons SHO over refusal to register FIR for death of JSQM’s former chairperson
The party’s workers had gone to the Sakrand police station on Sept 29.
SHAHEED BENAZIRABAD:
A district and sessions judge has summoned the Sakrand police, asking them to appear before court on October 22 to explain why they did not register a case for the death of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz’s former chairperson, Bashir Qureshi.
Maqsood Qureshi, who is the younger brother of Bashir Qureshi, had filed an application on Monday in a district and sessions court, asking it to order law enforcers to register an FIR against Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, the directors general of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Sindh Rangers.
The application was filed in the court of first additional sessions judge, Abdul Rahman Bhatti, because the district sessions judge was on leave. The application was then transferred to the third additional judge, Inamullah Kalhoro.
JSQM has formed a panel of 50 lawyers, headed by Advocate Shahbaz Daheri, to contest the case.
“Bashir Qureshi was attacked several times and warned to give up politics,” Maqsood Qureshi told journalists outside the court. “The men who killed Liaquat Ali Khan and Benazir Bhutto have not been arrested. We do not trust the system, but the court might be able to provide justice in this particular case.”
Sanan Qureshi, Bashir Qureshi’s son and JSQM’s current chairperson, told the media that the Sakrand police have lodged the FIR of its own choice, which the party does not accept. “We want to nominate Rahman Malik, and the directors general of the Rangers and ISI.”
Advocate Daheri said that every citizen has the constitutional right to go to court over the police’s injustice. He alleged that powerful people were behind Qureshi’s death.
JSQM leaders visited Sakrand police station on September 27 to register an FIR against state institutions but the law enforcers refused their request. Qureshi passed away on April 7 in Sakrand, Shaheed Benazirabad. The doctors concluded that he had died because of food poisoning, but JSQM workers and his family suspect foul play.
An activist of Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi was killed while two others were wounded in a targeted attack within Landhi police remits.
