KARACHI:

A man accused of firing at the police was acquitted on Thursday by a district and sessions judge.

The prosecutors claimed that Mullah Nawaz, and at least seven other accomplices, had shot at law enforcers during a raid they conducted five years ago in the Jhat Pat Market area. No policeman was injured during the incident and no one was arrested. The sub-inspector of the Kalakot police station, Ali Muhammad, registered an FIR against Nawaz under many sections of the Pakistan Penal Code. He was arrested during a raid conducted in April this year.

Police, however, couldn’t muster enough evidence against Nawaz. “Police officials are good witnesses,” said the district and sessions judge, Shagufta Siddiqui. “But in such cases, the evidence must be of high quality. There are too many loopholes in the case.”

The judge acquitted Nawaz under section 265-K of the Criminal Procedure Code.
