SAHIWAL:
Three men, who were arrested by the police on Sunday morning, were killed on Monday. Police say the suspects were killed in an exchange of fire with their accomplices who tried to free them.
The deceased were identified as Akram, Abdul Ghaffar and Ali Sher.
On Sunday, the police had come upon four people, tied and abandoned in a corn field. Police said the men had told them that a gang of four had looted them at the Lower Bari Doab canal bridge, near village 99/6-R. Three men – Haji Muhammad, Rafiq and Jamil – claimed that Rs131,000 had been taken from them. A motorcycle was snatched from Abdul Hakim.
A police team chased the suspects and arrested three of them after exchanging fire for an hour and a half. One of the suspects, later identified by his accomplices as Nazeer Ahmed, escaped. Police said they had recovered a carbine, a sub-machinegun and a rifle.
Fareed Town police said the suspects had told them, during interrogation, that they had buried the loot in a corn field.
Police said while they were taking the suspects to the field, men on a motorcycle and a car – both missing registration plates – opened fire at them near Adda Boti Pal. The police retaliated.
DPO Muhammad Ayaz Saleem told reporters that the men killed were wanted for 40 cases of robberies, rape and other crimes.
