UPPER DIR:

Security officials on Thursday claimed to have killed eight militants when more than three dozen men crossed the border from Afghanistan and attacked the Karakar check post in Barawal tehsil of Upper Dir district.

Amjad, a member of the security forces, was killed in the firefight with militants in the Bin Darra area near the Pak-Afghan border.

“The security personnel used heavy weapons to repulse the incursion,” an official claimed adding that the fleeing intruders took along the bodies of their fallen comrades.

Cross border attacks in Upper Dir district and in Bajaur Agency have become rampant. In June, 17 security personnel were killed when dozens of militants from Afghanistan attacked security check posts in Sunai Darra and Gulunu Sar areas of Barawal.

The attacks on the border check posts show that the insurgents from Afghanistan have stepped up their terrorist activities and were reunited, despite several military operations in the troubled areas.
