Post-election scenario: New FCCI team faces daunting challenges

Election results announced, Aslam takes over as president

FAISALABAD:
The Election Commission of Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) announced official results for the chamber’s elections in the annual general meeting here on Thursday, paving the way for Zahid Aslam to take office of president.

Following the announcement, newly elected office-bearers took over, including President Aslam and Vice-President Chaudhry Muhammad Boota, who were declared elected unopposed.

In his address, Aslam said “we face many challenges pertaining to deteriorating economic situation in the country. There are issues of gas and electricity shortages and the industry and trade is passing through uncertain times, which indicates that the government is not serious about addressing these issues.”

Surprisingly, the economic growth of other countries in the region was far better than Pakistan, he said and stressed the need for dealing with root causes of the energy problem. He called for construction of large dams as the cheapest source of electricity from hydel resources.

He also pointed to the implications of the war on terror for the trade and industry. “War on terror is not ours and we have to get rid of this. We were pushed into the war and now we are trapped.”

Aslam expressed the determination that he would work to improve the profile of FCCI in order to get more representation in government bodies. Being the apex trade forum and mother organisation of Faisalabad, the FCCI would take care of the interests of all trade sectors, he added.

The chamber will constitute a committee of senior members, which will work as a think tank to review dire economic issues and suggest solutions.

On the occasion, outgoing President Muzammil Sultan highlighted his performance during the just-ended tenure.
