ILO offers to help families train and get jobs

ILO for technical assistance on rapid training of labour inspectors in Sindh to promote fire safety at workplace.

ISLAMABAD: The International Labour Organisation (ILO) on Thursday offered to help assess the loss of income for the families of the victims and ways to help them get back on their feet again, it said in a press release on Thursday.

It said it was "deeply shocked and concerned" to learn of the death of more than 250 workers in the factory fire in Karachi and extended its condolences to the families.

The ILO offered its support for the families to help recover from their loss and it would be willing to help strengthen the Sindh labour department to prevent such incidents from reoccuring.

Providing details of assistance that the ILO will extend to the families of the victims, the release said these would include immediate to medium term measures. It will extend skill-training scholarships to 500 members of the families and link them with decent jobs. It can extend technical assistance on the rapid training of labour inspectors in Sindh on promoting fire safety at the workplace.

In the medium term it will help build institutional capacity of the Sindh labour department to improve the efficiency of its labour inspections. It can help create awareness for employer organisations for self-regulation. It can advocate developing a code of conduct and partner with the media to promote safe work concepts in the country.
