Kalabagh dam: Petitioner seeks ‘gag order’ on politicians opposing the dam

Wants chief minister to take up the matter before the CCI.

LAHORE:

A petition, praying that the Lahore High Court direct politicians to refrain from opposing the construction of the Kalabagh Dam and the Punjab chief minister to take up the matter before the Council of Common Interests, has been filed in the high court.

Barrister Bilal Ahmed, the petitioner, has termed the dam “necessary to fulfil the energy needs of the country”. He said the dam will help improve crop yields but some people, including politicians, were opposing the construction of the dam.

The high court chief justice, while hearing a similar petition in August, had remarked that the project was one of “national importance” and that the court had the authority to intervene.

The CJ had shown dissatisfaction over the federal government’s reply to the petition that asks that the government be directed to build the dam. He had told the government to submit a report about the dam’s benefits.

The court will take up the matter on September 13.
