4 nationalist parties cause Sindh to shut down
HYDERABAD:
A shutter down strike was observed across the province on Thursday on the call of the Nationalists Progressive Alliance - comprising Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party, Awami Tahreek Sindh, Sindh United Party and Sindh Save Movement - against the 18th amendment of the constitution.
Terming the amendment “constitutional slavery”, the four nationalist parties claim that this move would push the provincial autonomy situation back to what it was in 1973, depriving the province of what it received under earlier amendments.
More than 50 workers of the alliance had been rounded up by the police, according to Nationalists Progressive Alliance spokesman Noor Ahmad Katiar. In Hyderabad, talukas of Qasimabad, parts of Latifabad and Hyderabad city, most markets and bazaars remained closed with very little public transport seen on the roads in response to the strike call.
Women activists of the Sindhiani Tehrik organised a rally at Hyder Chowk, carrying bamboo sticks and chanting slogans against the government. Party supporters torched and damaged many cars. On the national highway, activists set tyres on fire and pelted stones at cars, causing a traffic jam that lasted for many hours.
A complete shutter down strike was also held in Thatta, Sajawal, Mirpur Bathoro, and Gharo, Kotri, Jamshoro, Badin and Matli.
