The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs took strong notice of the absence of the foreign affairs Secretary and special secretary at their meeting on Wednesday.
Committee members decided to notify the senate chairman of the issue and possibly refer the matter to the Privilege Committee of the Senate in case both secretaries were absent in any further meetings.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Committee Chairman Senator Haji Muhammad Adeel said, “There was an extremely important agenda on the cards… We wanted to clear our minds regarding the memorandum of understanding signed by Pakistan and US, but our officials do not seem to be in a mood to enlighten us over these issues pertaining to the national security.”
Committee members complained against the attitude of diplomatic staff posted abroad and observed that the Pakistani community was facing hardships at their hands. The appointments of non-career diplomats were discussed in the meeting as well, with members calling for adopting a more transparent procedure in this regard.
A resolution condemning the killings of Muslims in Myanmar was also passed.
