Winds of change: One group of Mahars to join PPP

Mahar group has stayed on the sidelines of politics for the last four years.

GHOTKI:

Ali Gohar Mahar, the leader of the Mahar group, will announce that they are joining the Pakistan Peoples Party at a public gathering in Khan Garh.

This is a significant development insofar as the Mahar group has stayed on the sidelines of politics for the last four years. Prior to this they backed the Pakistan Muslim League-Q.

The Mahar consists of Ali Gohar and his brothers, Ali Muhammad Mahar and Raja Mahar, and their cousin Muhammad Bux Mahar. Ali Muhammad Mahar held the post of chief minister of Sindh during Musharraf’s tenure. The Mahars are strong in upper Sindh’s Sukkur, Shikarpur, Ghotki areas. On the other side of the fence but of the same clan is Ghous Bux Mahar, who has cast his die with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid.

On Friday, Ali Gohar said that that his group would soon meet President Asif Ali Zardari.

Sources told Sindh Express that Mahar felt that his group’s opponents, Dhareja and Lund, were trying to prevent them from joining the PPP.

Sources said that Mahar met with one of his group’s supporters, Rahim Bux Bozdar, and took him into confidence about joining the PPP as well.
