Villagers spotted the body of an Indian soldier floating in the River Sheok in Khaplu on Sunday.

Villagers spotted the body of an Indian soldier floating in the River Sheok in Khaplu on Sunday. As soon as they saw the body,  the villagers rushed to pull it out of the river.

Sources in Skardu told The Express Tribune that the body was found by some male villagers who were hauling out wood from the river.

The deceased Indian soldier, who was in his early 30s, was probably taking part in rescue operations in flood-hit Indian Kashmir. Floodwaters may have carried him over to Pakistan.

A large group of onlookers gathered to get a glimpse of the corpse.  The local people later handed over the body to the authorities who forwarded the corpse to the Kargil sector for onward handling to Indian authorities, across the Line of Control.

According to reports, in Indian held Kashmir, hundreds of people have been washed away by flash floods and landslides triggered by the torrential rains which also played havoc in Pakistan, affecting 20 million people in the country.

In a separate incident, the body of a Pakistani soldier buried in a village in Ghanche district resurfaced after more than a year and a half, as floods inundated graveyards of Kharko village last week. The soldier, Mohammad Amin, had died during the Swat operation against militants in 2009. He belonged to Kharko village and was serving in Northern Light Infantry [NLI] regiment. The relatives of the deceased had the body washed again, as per Islamic injunctions, and re-buried in the same graveyard that belonged to their ancestors, sources said.

The Sheok River flows through Ladakh in India and enters Ghanche district of Gilgit-Baltistan after covering over 500 kilometres. Apart from the corpses, drums and other materials were also seen flowing down the river.
