KARACHI:

The Anti-Terrorism Court-III heard a similar refrain from police officers tasked with investigating cases filed over the violence in Lyari – that they could not arrest and produce those accused, including Uzair Jan Baloch, the head of the banned Peoples Amn Committee.

Special Case 41 (III)/2012, filed based on the FIR 511/2012 registered at Kalakot police station, named Uzair Jan Baloch.

The offences cited in the FIR included rioting while armed with ‘deadly weapons’, unlawful assembly, common intent, attempted murder and using assault or criminal force against public servants to prevent them from doing their duty.

The case was declared dormant after the police filed a statement.

Another case against Uzair Jan Baloch (FIR 73/2012) is up for hearing on August 8.

The charges deal with attempted murder, murder, common intent, using assault or criminal force against public servants to prevent them from doing their duty and obstructing them from working.

On July 20, two cases were declared dormant in a similar manner by the ATC-III.

Those implicated in the cases, included Habib Jan Baloch, Taj Mohammad and Umar Kutchi, and were filed at the Chakiwara and Kalakot police stations.

The men were accused of murder, attempted murder, obstructing public servants, and violating sections 3 and 4 of the Explosives Act among other charges.

In May, four cases registered over the violence in Lyari and adjoining areas were set to be declared dormant because the police could not arrest any of the men named in the First Information Reports.

On May 29, the Napier Road police told the ATC-III that it had not been able to find Uzair Jan or Umar Kutchi in a case filed against them. Cases are declared dormant after non-bailable warrants are executed and the investigating officers testify that they were unable to arrest the accused men.
