Missed deadline: Govt could be sued over VCs’ appointments
Several senior teachers at the King Edward Medical University (KEMU) are planning to file a contempt petition against the Punjab government for failing to appoint vice chancellors (VC) to the University of Health Sciences (UHS) and KEMU despite Supreme Court orders in this regard, sources at KEMU told The Express Tribune.
The Supreme Court had directed the government on March 14to appoint VCs at KEMU and UHS and given it three months.
The SC had also directed the government to appoint a pro VC and a chief executive at the UHS.
More than 10 days after the deadline given to the Punjab Government for appointments, permanent VCs have yet not been appointed.
Khawaja Salman Rafique, chief minister’s special assistant on health, told The Express Tribune that the KEMU Act and UHS Act had been amended and the new legislation forwarded to the governor of Punjab for his assent.
“Once he signs them..., we will advertise the vacancies in the newspapers,” he said.
Meanwhile, till the VCs are appointed, Dr Asad Aslam Khan, the acting VC at KEMU, is also serving as the acting pro VC.
Prof IA Naveed has been the acting VC at UHS since March 14 when the government withdrew notification of Prof Malik Hussain Mubbasher’s appointment, while the office of the pro VC at the UHS has been vacant for six years.

Prof Tehseen Sahi should be appointed as VC KEMU as he is the senior most professor in punjab. The only draw back about him is that he has no link to the beurocracy and politicians. Sad for us , the senior most professor is retiring soon.
