Men and guns: CID officer among 10 gunned down

PTI claims that its worker was killed, while police say he was shot during a brawl.

The multitude of shooting attacks claimed 10 lives in the city on Sunday.


A CID official, Anees, was shot in Orangi Town Sector 5-E, within Pirabad police limits. His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. CID SSP Chaudhry Aslam said that Anees was the fifth CID official to be targeted in a couple of months, and suspected that Taliban militants were responsible.

A Pakistan Peoples Party activist, Usman Baloch, and his friend Akbar Baloch were shot dead within limits Malir City police limits. Officials said that at least two bandits shot the victims at Pir Mehfooz Road. Their bodies were taken to the Jinnah hospital for autopsy. Rangers and police were deployed in the area and commercial activities were suspended.

Another PPP worker, Amir Gabol, was shot dead in New Karachi within Bilal Colony police limits. Police said that the victim was shot multiple times by two men on a motorcycle, while he was sitting at an oil shop near his home. He died while receiving treatment at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Confusion abounded about the political affiliation of the third victim, Dilawar Ali Awan, who was reportedly targeted at Zamzama Street, within Clifton police remits.

Awan, 24, was shot thrice in the chest and doctors at Jinnah hospital pronounced him dead on arrival.

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf claimed that Awan was a leader of its student wing, the Insaf Students Federation. However, police said that the victim was not affiliated with any political organisation, and that he died while being involved in a brawl.

SHO Asif Ali Jakharani told The Express Tribune that Awan, his friend Kamran and an unnamed woman had gone to Clifton beach around 8:00 am, and later went to a restaurant in the Bukhari commercial area for breakfast. Jakharani, while quoting the victim’s friend, said that the three later went to Zamzama. “Awan was standing with the woman when four people in a white Suzuki Mehran arrived. A fight broke out among, during which one person fired at Awan, and then they all fled.”

“Before claiming his affiliation with their party, the PTI or ISF should at least confirm the nature of the incident [with the police],” said Jakharani

Body found

Malir City police found the body of a young man from a public ground, which was shifted to Edhi morguefor identification.

Overnight killings

An MQM activist, Shakeel aka Mamu, was killed in Safora Goth late on Saturday. Police said that Shakeel was sitting in front his house when two men on a motorcycle shot him. He was taken to Jinnah hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Lala, 18, and Mubarak Shah, 38, were gunned down in Bukhari Colony. Police said that the victims were sitting in Baloch Mohalla when they were shot. Their bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

A navy official succumbed to injuries at Jinnah hospital. Kamran Ali was injured when criminals opened fire at a police mobile near Natha Khan Goth on Saturday. A head constable, Ghulam Raza, had earlier died on the spot.

Injured

Ali Jan, a policeman, was injured during a firing incident at Dabba Mor, Orangi Town. He was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors termed his condition as critical. Meanwhile, Irfan Ali and Sajid Raza were injured when two bandits fired at them in Ghazi Town, within Malir police limits.
