Two guards killed in bank robbery

Robbers flee with Rs3.9 million.

Two security guards were killed in a bank robbery on Wednesday in which the robbers fled unharmed with Rs3.9 million.


Police said two armed men entered a Habib Bank Limited Sameejabad’s branch at around noon and started firing killing a guard Junaid Iqbal, 26, on the spot. Another guard, Bahar Khan, in his 60s, was injured.

They said one of the robbers threatened to shoot the staff and customers if they moved, while the second one collected cash from the counters. They left with Rs3.9 million and also threw a hand grenade inside as they left, but it did not explode.

Police, Bomb Disposal Squad and Rescue 1122 officials were called. The injured was taken to a hospital, but he died on the way. The bomb was difused by the disposal squad.

City Police Officer Amir Zulfiqar Khan told The Express Tribune that police had found some clues that would help find the criminals.

Gulgasht Superintendent of Police Shoaib Khurram told The Tribune that preliminary investigation suggested that the criminals belonged to a banned militant organisation in the area. He said witness statements suggested that the criminals had carried modern weapons, used by terrorists.
