Shab-i-Barat celebrations: Three children injured in fireworks accident
11 arrested for fireworks trade in Faisalabad.
GUJRANWALA/FAISALABAD:
Three children suffered severe burns in a fireworks accident at their home in Qila Deedar Singh Town on Saturday.
They were taken to Civil Hospital where doctors gave them first aid and referred them to Mayo Hospital in Lahore. Dr Zahid Jafri told The Express Tribune that the children, two of them four-year-olds and one eight-year-old, had burns on about 35 per cent of their bodies. “Their faces and arms were most affected by the accident,” he said.
He said the children – Muskaan, Nauman and Khurram – were referred to Lahore because there was no burn unit at any of the public hospitals in Gujranwala.
Some neighbours who helped their mother take the children to the hospital said they had been playing with fireworks on Shab-i-Barat when sparks from one of the crackers fell on leaking gas pipe, which caused the blast.
In Faisalabad, raiding teams of Civil Defence Department arrested 11 men on charges of storing, selling and purchasing fireworks on Thursday night.
They were identified as Muhammad Nauman, Bilal Ahmed and Rizwan Ahmed from Mohallah Sharifpura; Mian Akram of Montgomery Bazaar; Sajjad Ali, Abbas Ali and Naveed Ali from Jhang Bazaar; Manzoor Elahi from Faizabad; Umair Ahmed from Gol Bhowana Bazaar; Muhammad Dilawar from Islam Nagar and Nadeem Ahmed from Rail Bazaar.
The fireworks seized from across the city during raids by the district administration teams were destroyed at a dumping site on Friday.
