GILGIT: The Gilgit police foiled an attempt by two convicts to escape Jutial sub-jail on Tuesday, whereas an alleged thief was arrested after a brief shootout with the police near Baseen. The two convicts, who are serving time for committing murders, had made a hole in the wall of their makeshift jail and were caught minutes before making an escape, jail authorities told The Express Tribune.  Both the inmates have been shifted to another barrack and security at the jail has been beefed up. In the second incident, police arrested an alleged thief after a brief shootout near Baseen. According to the Basin police, a suspicious man was asked to stop near the RCC Bridge. The man, identified as Israr, opened fire at the police in response. After a brief exchange of fire, the accused surrendered. He was booked and put in police lockups.
