Kashmala Tariq, Secretary Information of Pakistan Muslim League, has opposed Attiya Inayatullah Bill on Reproductive Health introduced on Friday in the meeting of Standing Committee on Human Rights.
The bill discusses the issue of abortion, which she said is a very sensitive matter and needs a holistic approach from ethical, cultural and religious perspectives from every quarter concerned. The bill meant to facilitate and promote reproductive health rights had a lot of areas to be deliberated.
“We are in Islamic Republic of Pakistan and all the laws are (to be) in conformity with Islam, Quran, Sunnah and Constitution,” Kashmala said in a statement. It seemed that foreign agendas were being pursued and some members of NGOs were pursuing hard to bypass the procedure.
She highlighted that things which create a doubt whether they were in conformity with Islamic laws should be sent to the Council of Islamic Ideology or every party should give their opinion on that.

Access to safe and legal abortions is a fundamental right. No serious philosopher or scientist takes the position that a fetus is a person -- all arguments against abortion come from arguments about the sanctity of life. But the sanctity of life does not always require you to carry a pregnancy to term, and at any rate, once a decision becomes a purely moral or religious one, our notions of religious freedom have to come in and allow everyone to make their decisions based upon their own personal moral and religious convictions. The state cannot impose its view of morality or religion upon all citizens.
