ISLAMABAD:

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has allowed power distribution companies on Wednesday to raise power tariff by Rs1.51 per unit on account of fuel adjustment charges for May 2012.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested Nepra to tariffs by Rs1.52 per unit to recover cost of fuel for May. The increase will be reflected in electricity bills of December and not the upcoming month as July will have adjusted bill of an earlier month.

The CPPA maintained that the actual cost of fuel for thermal power generation in May 2012 was Rs8.06 per unit against the reference fuel price of Rs6.54 per unit causing hike in power tariff.

Power distribution companies (discos) sold 7.37 billion units in May, which had a fuel cost of Rs59.42 billion.

While responding to the request of few power producers, Nepra officials expressed serious concerns over the poor efficiency rate and asked them to improve it.

During the public hearing held on Wednesday, CPPA officials said that the price of furnace oil during May 2012 was Rs72,000 per ton compared to the reference its price of Rs65,000 per ton.

It has also been highlighted that out of the total electricity sold to Discos in May, a major chunk of 34.46% was produced through furnace oil followed by gas-based thermal production which was 28.20%. Hydel production contributed 29.16%, nuclear production 5.82%, coal 1.04%, electricity production through High Speed Diesel accounted for 1.07% and wind-based power generation contributed 1%.

Meanwhile, electricity imported from Iran accounted for 1.43% of the total power sold to Discos in May.
