KARACHI:

A book titled Karbala – Tehzeeb Ka Mustaqbil, penned by the late eminent philosopher and scholar Syed Muhammad Taqi, was launched on Tuesday evening at the Arts Council.

A number of intellectuals and artists as well as Taqi’s family members were present at the launch and paid rich tributes to him. Taqi wrote the book in 1980 and gave the original manuscript to the Iranian Cultural Centre, Khana-e-Farhang Iran, for publication, but it was misplaced. After Taqi’s death, his children recompiled the manuscript using notes that the author left behind.

Former Karachi University professor, Dr Syed Husain Mohammad Jafri, said that the book was the essence of Taqi’s literary works. He read out excerpts from the book and said that Taqi linked philosophy to Karbala. “You will find hundreds of books that serve as an introduction to Hussain Ibne Ali (RA), but this one serves as an introduction to Yazeed,” said Dr Jafri.

A documentary which highlighted the life and works of Taqi was screened at the programme.

The chief guest, Dr Muhammad Ali Siddiqui, underlined the importance of reading philosophical classics and said that they should be taught at every educational institution. Dr Aliya Imam, another prominent writer, said that in this era when fascination to ‘darul kitaab’ (library) has long been overshadowed by ‘darul kabaab’ (restaurants), one really misses scholars like Syed Muhammad Taqi. The 149-page book has been published by Welcome Book Port and costs Rs200.
